It's Hip to Be Green® for One Asheville Businesswoman

Asheville, NC, When Lisa Hawkins, lover of all things healthy and green began, looking for a business she could start from home that would allow her to continue to work from home time with her youngest child, she knew she wanted to focus on products and services that were not only good for her customers, but good for the earth as well. Her love of organic gardening, eco sewing, hiking and all things natural helped her decide that a business centered around the desire to help others live better while protecting the environment was what she wanted.

With a background in business administration, marketing, and sales, it seemed natural for Hawkins to form her own company. That's what she did in 2001. At a time when the green movement was just taking hold in the US, Hawkins formed an eco cleaning business that used toxin-free products and offered healthy, chemical-free cleaners to her customers. After closing that business, due to her pregnancy, Hawkins still longed to center a business on doing more for the planet. That's when Pumpkin Doodle was born.

As she began planning for the start of her new venture, she was looking for a statement and an idea that would convey her love for natural products and organics to the public. That's how she came up with the slogan, "It's Hip to Be Green®" in late 2005 while she was working on her business plan. It wasn't until August 2006 that she was fully convinced this statement would represent what her business was all about and she decided to register it.

"My thoughts at the time were that being green needed to become a new trend in order for the Green movement to truly catch and go viral," Hawkins recalls. "Being green is so much more than a fad that will fade away. It's a hip and necessary thing to do. Being green is a state of mind."

Hawkins, who avidly promotes her business now that her little one is in school, has been featured on a number of websites, in local newspapers, and on HGTV's "My Parents' House." She also writes a blog sharing ideas about living healthier with non-toxic, eco and organic products while teaching her readers that it really is hip to be green.
