Online, November 3, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Some 100 members of the Israel Harley Davidson club will descend on the Northern Dead Sea, Friday 12.11.10 in preparation for a Love-the-Dead-Sea Bike Weekend that will take place in June 2011. The bikers will call to vote for the Dead Sea in the finals of the New7Wonders of Nature campaign, in which the lowest place on earth is currently competing against 27 other finalists.
"This is a warm-up ride taking place one year before the final announcement of the 7 winners", notes General (Res) Udi Adam, one of the Harley Davidson bikers and initiators of the ride. "We hope to have more than 1000 bikers from bike clubs all over the country riding in the Love-the-Dead-Sea Bike Weekend in June 2011, so that the noise of our exhausts will be heard throughout the Dead Sea."
The Dead Sea is one of 28 finalists competing for the final 7 places in the New7Wonders of Nature campaign out of an initial count of 420 natural sites around the world. Other finalists include the Amazon River, the Galapagos Islands, the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef and the Maldives. About a billion votes are expected to be cast before the campaign ends on 11.11.11, and it is estimated that the winning seven finalists will need to secure about 300-400 million votes.
The Dead Sea is one of Israel's most popular tourism sites, with approximately 45% of all incoming tourists visiting the lowest point on earth. The tourism industry includes 15 hotels along the shoreline, an additional 19 guest houses in the region's kibbutzim and villages and many businesses, all of which employ some 4500 workers.
