Intel Lifts Panel-size Restrictions for Dual-core Atom netbooks

Wider variety of notebooks will be allowed in the netbook market.

Intel plans on launching the Atom N550, a dual-core Atom processor, in the second half of this year. It has also decided to lift restrictions imposed on the panel sizes of netbooks which are using the CPU. This means that vendors will now be allowed to bring out 11.6 and 12.1 inches notebooks, depending on the sources of notebook players.

Intel's previous Atom CPUs carry restrictions that basically do not allow devices to have a panel size that is greater than 10.2 inches in order to prevent netbooks cutting into demand for traditional notebooks.

Netbooks that are adopting the Atom N550 will feature 1 GB of DDR3 memory and a 250 GB hard drive or 32 GB solid state drive (SSD).

Intel clarifies that it still remains optimistic about the netbook market and still stands by its speculation of seeing hundreds of millions of netbooks over the following years. "We will continue to include new features, performance and higher levels of integration in the future and we are also committed to innovating in this industry," the company said.
