Inova Alexandria Hospital Wins Gold

Partners In Leadership, the Accountability Training and Culture Change Company, awarded the 2017 Gold Ozzie in the healthcare category to Inova Alexandria Hospital (IAH), a leading Virginia community healthcare facility. The Ozzie Awards celebrate organizations that demonstrate excellence in accountability, leadership and culture through implementation of Partners In Leadership programs.

"Inova Alexandria Hospital commits wholeheartedly to building a culture that energizes and empowers the entire staff to participate in patient safety,” said Craig Hickman, SVP and Co-Author of The Oz Principle. “They are a world-class example of how an organization can transform its culture to improve an area that is arguably the most important part of the healthcare industry."

"We worked very hard in 2016. It has been an amazing journey that we are going to continue. We have had great results. And thank you to our CEO, Susan T. Carroll, our fearless leader who has done an amazing job."

Rina Bansal, Chief Medical Officer of Inova Alexandria Hospital

In 2016, the executive leadership of IAH committed to a stretch goal of achieving zero harm. Today, IAH has seen a 60% reduction in Central Line Infections and Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections, an almost 50% reduction in Hospital Acquired Clostridium Difficile Cases, and a 42% reduction in Falls.

The hospital achieves these dramatic results from its culture initiative. In a bustling, metropolitan hospital with 318 beds, achieving zero harm requires more than a strong strategy. To succeed, IAH has aligned everyone in the organization around that desired result using Partners In Leadership’s tools and training to build a Culture of Accountability.

The organization's leadership conducts daily safety rounds on every inpatient unit, maintains an ongoing dialogue with the frontline staff to facilitate feedback, and has developed clear standards for all hospital roles.

“This is a great honor,” said Rina Bansal, Chief Medical Officer of Inova Alexandria Hospital. Dr. Bansal accepted the award at the Ozzie Awards ceremony on behalf of the hospital. “We worked very hard in 2016. It has been an amazing journey that we are going to continue. We have had great results. And thank you to our CEO, Susan T. Carroll, our fearless leader who has done an amazing job.”

IAH has continued its unwavering commitment to culture on its journey to zero harm. For this reason, Partners In Leadership is proud to offer them the 2017 Gold Ozzie award for their extraordinary effort and achievement.
