India Furniture Suppliers Boast Various Competitive Edges To Attract Global Volume Buyers

Optimistic exporters forecast robust sales in next six months; Makers emphasize on midrange to high-end segments to tap new markets

Constant, abundant source of raw materials, strong OEM capability, synergy of plastic and steel sectors and resurgence of the outlet markets prompt India furniture suppliers to anticipate an increase of 10 percent in export sales this year.

This is according to the India Sourcing Report: Indoor & Outdoor Furniture. The non-profit Kearny Alliance released the Report with the support of its partner in development, Global Sources.

The Report features profiles of 28 experienced exporters with verified manufacturing and production capacity. It also includes descriptions, prices and packaging details for more than 150 top-selling export products ranging from garden and outdoor, dining and kitchen, bedroom to living room furniture.

"One of the key strengths that India furniture sector benefits from is that the country is home to teak, mango, mahogany and sheesham, bamboo, rattan all of which are mostly used for various indoor and outdoor wooden furniture, paneling and cabinets," said Khiem Vu, Program manager of The Kearny Alliance's Export Assistance Program.

"Buyers show their significant interests in wooden furniture this year, which accounts for 93 percent of exports.

"Suppliers note that there is a growing demand from traditional overseas markets such as the US and the EU for midrange and upscale. They tend to request for traditional items ranging from wooden basic to antique designs featuring modular, lightweight and multifunction."

Survey results outline target export markets, product and price trends

In addition to industry overview and prices forecasts, the Report offers survey results from featured suppliers. High-level results show:

 61 percent will target EU;
 68 percent plan to focus on more decorative elements and designs;
 93 percent specialize in wooden furniture type among others;
 71 percent expect to increase export sales by up to 10 percent; and
 43 percent of export product is living room furniture.

Featured suppliers have a combined export sales of $46.3 million. The least expensive furniture items are priced from $10 to $20 for a simple design chair or desk made of wood, iron or stainless steel, while average prices of high-end shoes are about $300 to $500.

Quality sourcing intelligence helps create more jobs

"The Sourcing Report is one primary component of the Kearny Alliances' Developing Country Export Assistance Program," Boome said. "The aim of the program is to assist small- to mid-sized export manufacturers in Vietnam, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia to tap new export markets. As a result, local suppliers can hire more workers and create sustainable jobs.

"We can only succeed in our mission if we give buyers information on quality suppliers who understand their requirements. The suppliers we feature in Developing Country Sourcing Reports have rich export experience and are eager to work with new overseas buyers."
