In 1962, three men escaped from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary and headed for freedom. They were never seen again. Some said they surely drowned in the waters around Alcatraz Island. Others say an escape was possible. Those who participate in the San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz will swim in those same waters in this 3-part event.
The San Francisco event begins with the swim. Athletes will jump from a boat between Alcatraz Island and the mainland. After completing a 1.2-mile swim, the 23-mile bike ride begins. The bike route takes athletes over hilly terrain. The bike ride portion of the triathlon ends at Little Marina Green. The last segment of the race is the Baker Beach Run. The run covers 6.1 miles and ends, again, at Little Marina Green and the site of the Fitness Expo.
Participants will come from around the world to take part in this San Francisco event, but participation is limited to 900 entrants. As of this writing, spots are still available, but those who want to compete in this year’s Triathlon at Alcatraz should register as soon as possible.
The Fitness Expo is a popular feature of the triathlon. Vendors will show products and services to help people get or stay in triathlon-ready shape.
