Heritage, Service and Excellence Celebrated at UNICO National Gala

The illustrious UNICO National 101st Annual Convention & Italian American Awards Gala was a remarkable celebration of exceptional leadership and profound contributions. Among the distinguished honorees was Ralph LaRossa, Chair, President, and CEO of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PSEG). Recognized for his substantial achievements, LaRossa received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in Business Leadership presented by his esteemed predecessor, Ralph Izzo, who added a personal touch to the evening's festivities and underscored LaRossa’s sincere admiration within the business community. 

Anthony Capuano, the respected President and CEO of Marriott International, delivered a heartfelt video tribute to LaRossa. Capuano, the prior year recipient of UNICO's coveted business leadership award, lauded LaRossa for his outstanding accomplishments. 

The gala paid homage to other luminaries, including Sal Paolantonio, the renowned ESPN NFL National Correspondent, who was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Journalism & Broadcasting Excellence. Notably, ESPN Chairman James Pitaro extended his sincere congratulations from Paris, France, where he was attending the Olympics, underscoring the significance of this prestigious event.

Another highlight of the evening was the acknowledgment of Lawrence Inserra, Jr., the visionary leader behind Inserra Supermarkets, Inc. Inserra's significant philanthropic contributions were celebrated, and he was presented with the revered Cianci Humanitarian Award. Ralph Torraco received the prestigious Vastola Award, Carol Martini Hemphill accepted the Rizzuto Award, and Sean Mullin received the Americanism Award. The gala further cemented UNICO's reputation for recognizing individuals who have left an indelible mark on their chosen fields.

The esteemed military awards are especially important to UNICO, who seek to honor our nation’s veterans for their defense of freedom and selfless service to country. John Dunne received the DeFilippo American Hero Award, John Lapo received the Anthony Fornelli American War Veteran Award, and Ben Cascio received the John Basilone Freedom Award. 

A significant milestone was reached with the election of Anthony Bengivenga as the new UNICO National President. His appointment signals the organization's steadfast commitment to continued growth, community service, and the preservation of Italian American heritage.

Beyond the celebration of individual achievements, the gala supports UNICO's nonprofit mission. UNICO has consistently provided over $1,000,000 in scholarships and charitable assistance annually, making a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals and communities. 

As the largest Italian American Service Organization in America, UNICO’s steadfast dedication to "Service Above Self" has solidified its position as a powerful force for good. With chapters across the nation, the organization plays a vital role in preserving Italian American heritage while also addressing critical societal needs.
