Helicopter New York City Faced With NYC City Council Bill

Helicopter New York City along with Additional Businesses to Feel Impact of Potential NYC City Council Bill

Helicopter New York City, a helicopter tour company based out of New York, is one of many helicopter companies that may be grounded permanently if the NYC council gets their way.

More than 200 helicopter company workers stand to lose their jobs if the proposed bill is passed. The bill, proposed by the NYC council, suggests that city residents have long complained about the noise from tourist helicopters overhead. Advocates for the bill believe that removal of helicopter tourism completely is the best response to these complaints. This is not the first instance the NY City Council has gone after the tourism industry, however, having already proposed bills in the past to restrict horse carriages and UBER.

"It would be very disappointing if there were no helicopter tours in New York, especially after working so hard to provide visitors an unforgettable experience during their stay in this great city."

Matthew Day, Helicopter New York City President

Helicopter Tourism Businesses’ have long proven to be valuable contributions to the cities’ economy, creating employment opportunities and bringing in revenue to the city through tourism.  Just last year, the industry brought in roughly $30 million in spending and more than $5 billion in state and local taxes alone. Additionally, businesses such as Helicopter New York City are active members in the community giving back to the homeless through non-profits and community organizations. Helicopter New York has been involved in the “Bagels 4 the Hungry” initiative for three years serving the homeless of New York every week. They also are known in the community for their exemplary customer service and informative tours of the city known as “The Big Apple.”

“It would be very disappointing if there were no helicopter tours in New York,” said Helicopter New York City President Matthew Day. "Especially after working so hard to provide visitors an unforgettable experience during their stay in this great city.”

These businesses have been compliant throughout the years, making concessions as needed including reducing operating hours and making route changes to reduce the impact they were making on the city. Just earlier in the year, tour operators voluntarily agreed to stop flying over land.

If the bill passes, hundreds of working-class New Yorkers will be out of a job, tens of millions of dollars brought in to fund local industries will be non-existent and positive corporate businesses such as Helicopter New York City will disappear from the city completely.
