Grover Norquist, Founder and President of Americans For Tax Reform, Says Tea Party Misled American Voters During Government Shutdown

Grover Norquist, discussed the state of the Republican Party and the government shutdown with The National Memo's Editor-in-Chief Joe Conason, in the progressive newsletter's latest Newsmaker Memo.

Norquist described Senator Cruz and his Tea Party colleagues' assertion that "if you truly believed and cared, Obamacare would disappear" as "not accurate," and "not honest, or honorable, or fair to tell voters." Norquist added that the government shutdown was "misdirected time and effort. It did not do anything to make the abolition or diminution of the damage of Obamacare possible or achievable. It did not accomplish anything."

Despite his criticism of the GOP's handling of the shutdown crisis, Norquist remains optimistic that future sequester and tax debates will reunite and strengthen the Republican Party. Norquist is confident that Republicans can maintain a majority in the House of Representatives, and gain a majority in the Senate in the 2014 midterm elections.

The National Memo published the Norquist interview in its newsletter and on its website on Wednesday, October 30. About The National Memo and the Newsmaker Memo

The National Memo is a political newsletter and website that combines the spirit of investigative journalism with new technology and ideas. We cover campaigns, elections, the White House, Congress, and the world with a fresh outlook. Our own journalism - as well as our selections of the smartest stories available every day - reflects a clear and strong perspective, without the kind of propaganda, ultra-partisanship and overwrought ideology that burden so much of our political discourse. The Newsmaker Memo is a monthly component of our newsletter and website in which we feature political and cultural leaders in exclusive interviews.
