Graphic Designers From Denver and Carolina Face Off Before Super Bowl Sunday

Local Designers & Friends from Carolina and Denver face off in the inaugural Design Brawl. Two Captains picked six designers located in Carolina and Denver to form Team Denver and Team Carolina. Both teams will design labels for a six pack of craft beer and go head-to-head in a competition for the best creative. Judging will be based on the team's ability to incorporate beer, state and team into one awesome beer label. Voting is open to the public at DesignBrawl.com

Football will not be the only thing on the line Super Bowl Sunday when graphic designers from Denver and Carolina face off in a Design Brawl featuring regional craft beer can designs open to online public voting at designbrawl.com starting on Thursday, February 4, 2016 and ending at noon on Super Bowl Sunday, February 6, 2016.

Josh Emrich, a Colorado-based graphic designer and Denver Broncos fan, tweeted to a fellow designer and Carolina Panthers fan, Matt Stevens, to challenge him to the design brawl after he knew the Broncos and Panthers were headed to Super Bowl 50. “Matt is a huge Carolina fan and has designed stuff for Ryan Kalil, the Panthers’ center,” Emrich said. “I knew he wouldn’t back down.”

Other graphic designers saw the tweet and wanted in.

“Before I even saw Josh’s tweet, some other really talented designers said they wanted to be on Team Denver or Team Carolina,” Stevens said. “Both Colorado and Carolina have strong creative communities and this friendly challenge offers an opportunity for designers in both cities to collaborate and show off their craft.”

Emrich and Stevens agreed to each draft and captain a team of six designers to represent either Denver or Carolina. Each designer is contributing a beer can design to a lineup where the public can vote on a MVP.

“Both Colorado and Carolina share a robust number of craft breweries and what goes better with football than beer?” Emrich said.

The losing team must post the winning team’s designs to their social media feeds before the big game. Emrich reached out to the Colorado-based web development firm Greystone Technology to host the voting website. “We thought it was a fun idea and, as huge Broncos fans, we agreed to build a custom voting site in less than a week,” said Derrick Kuhn, a Greystone partner.

The designers are also challenging their colleagues to follow their example for future Super Bowls.

“We hope to start a tradition where our fellow designers can use Design Brawl to square off,” Emrich said. “A cultural touchstone like the Super Bowl is a great opportunity to unify creative communities in different time zones. When you get creative people together with other creative people, there’s always the potential for new opportunities and great art.”
