Google's Year in Review: Top Search Trends in the UK That Rocked 2012

The United Kingdom took to Google for their daily search fix as major news stories from all over the world had everyone buzzing all over the Internet.

2012 was a year infused with big news stories that were just begging to be virally saturated all over the Internet. And the eyes of many were on the United Kingdom as many of the top trending searches focused mainly on the region.

Nabbing a one-two punch that began in 2011 with the widely publicised royal marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, the UK has retained the Google search spotlight with the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London, along with a strong and steady interest in the aforementioned Kate Middleton, now Duchess of Cambridge, who had announced late this year that she is now expecting her first child, the heir to the British throne.

Other noteworthy UK search topics included British sports superstars who participated in the London Olympic Games, such as Andy Murray for tennis, Victoria Pendleton for cycling, Tom Daley for diving, and Jessica Ennis for track and field. In the entertainment field, the twenty-third James Bond film release, "Skyfall", became the highest-grossing movie of all time in the United Kingdom and dominated film searches in the nation.

The same can be said of the powerhouse singer-songwriter Adele, who composed and sang the Bond film theme and had given birth to her first son. The vibrant music scene of the UK has also been a trending topic as artists like Ellie Goulding, Florence + The Machine, One Direction, and Calvin Harris made waves in their home turf, penetrating American music charts and Netizen searches.

Apart from the Anglomania sweeping through the bowels of Google, plenty of other memorable moments from the past year held interests for Brits everywhere, such as the US presidential elections wherein Barack Obama won a historic second term, the tragic death of iconic singer Whitney Houston, and the global music phenomenon from South Korea that was "Gangnam Style", courtesy of eccentric rapper Psy. Outside of general news and pop culture subjects, UK Googlers have been doing more esoteric searches for 2012 by keying in the "what is" and "how to" keywords with interesting results.
