“Godless Congregation” Celebrates Holidays in a Secular Fashion

Sunday Assembly peels back the layers of religious rituals to celebrate their ancient roots, the Winter Solstice.

Los Angeles, California – December 10, 2015 – Sunday Assembly Los Angeles, sometimes called “an atheist church”, is harkening back to a time when the focus was on connection and reflection in their first annual Winter Solstice event. The family-friendly celebration on December 19 in Hollywood will include songs and storytelling to reflect on the past year and usher in a new, brighter one.

For thousands of years varying cultures have celebrated the longest night of the year, and the lengthening days that follow it, leading to a time of rejuvenation, warmth and light. Part of a global movement, Sunday Assembly Los Angeles is not alone in their celebration of the Winter Solstice. Simultaneous celebrations will be happening in many of the 70 other Assemblies around the world, including San Diego, Brighton and New York.

"We joke that we're celebrating the real reason for the season -- the Earth's axial tilt," says attending member Sarah Sandberg, "but really it's about coming together with friends who are family to reflect on the past year and share our hopes for the coming one."

Sunday Assembly Los Angeles is a god-free community that meets the second Sunday of every month to hear great talks, connect for service projects, sing songs and celebrate life. Assemblies are free to attend; everyone is welcome; and free childcare is provided. Their mantra is “live better, help often, and wonder more."
