Gazeley Sponsors Forest In Inner Mongolia As Part of Million Tree Project

Industrial property develper Gazeley works with Roots & Shoots sponsoring forest in Inner Mongolia along with other companies such as Unilever, IBM, Coca-cola and Standard Chartered.

Gazeley, a leading global developer of logistics warehouses and distribution centres, is proud to announce their partnership with Roots and Shoots to sponsor a forest through the Million Tree project, a reforestation initiative in Kulun Qi, Inner Mongolia, China.

As part of the project, Gazeley China donated 2,000 trees and representatives from Gazeley China joined the trip for several days, along with other corporate donors from companies such as Unilever, Coca-Cola, Standard Chartered Bank and IBM, to get their hands dirty planting and pruning trees.

Kulun Qi, approximately 230 kilometers from Shenyang and 1800 kilometers from Shanghai, is the poorest region in Inner Mongolia and 1 of the 8 key protection areas chosen by the state government for conserving water and land. Local farmers and tree planters will maintain the newly planted poplar trees to ensure the high survival rate of them. These hybrid poplar trees, which constitute most of the trees planted are particularly effective at producing oxygen, playing an important role in reducing global warming.

The trees also serve the function of revitalizing the grasslands of the Kulun Qi area of Inner Mongolia, which have been overrun with farming and grazing, leading to desertification and sandstorms. Over 600,000 trees have been planted already with the goal of reaching 1 million trees by 2014. Local farmers are also allowed to harvest the trees after they maturity, with the understanding that they will plant new trees to ensure the sustainability of the forests.

As part of the program, the forest donors receive regular progress reports on the growth of their corporate sponsored forest, which are also marked with GPS coordinates and are visible from Google Earth.

"We are proud to be able to give something back to the community by participating in such a worthy project. We see a strong parallel with our goal of building sustainable logistics properties and the objectives of the Roots and Shoots Million Tree Project in rebuilding the environment and the communities in Inner Mongolia," said Sally Lin, Country Director, Gazeley China.
