FedTechServices, Inc. (FTS) provided United States Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) network operators with over 146 hours of Theater Network Management Architecture (TNMA) training at the Joint Base Lewis McChord, located in Tacoma, WA, prior to their deployment to Afghanistan.

In the past, network operators were not given the time to receive network monitoring training until they arrived at their duty stations, resulting in many weeks of on-the-job training sessions. These units were the first of their kind to receive practical, hands-on network monitoring experience prior to deployment. The training that FTS provided these soldiers will both save time and preserve mission focus.

FTS senior trainers traveled to the Joint Base to train the 422nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion (ESB) from Nevada, and the 228th Tactical Theater Signal Battalion (TTSB) from South Carolina. The 422nd ESB and the 228th TTSB received two weeks of "real world" training, which consisted of three days of formal classes and five days of one-on-one training in TNMA.

The 228th TTSB received their training in a simulated Joint NetOps Control Center - Afghanistan (JNCC-A) which is set up exactly like the JNCC-A that the network operators will work in. Within the simulated JNCC-A, the team received realistic scenarios, each of which consisted of a problem that the network operators diagnosed using TNMA tools. The 422nd ESB also participated in simulation exercises, in a different venue, to prepare for their arrival in the RNCC.

FTS conducted a survey at the conclusion of the training asking participants in the exercises for feedback and one lieutenant colonel said that, "the unit will be better prepared to utilize TNMA in theater."

One network operator commented that TNMA "is very effective and should be implemented Army wide."

A battle captain stated, "the solution and support is among the best available."

In general, both officers and enlisted personnel felt that the network operators will deploy to Afghanistan with extensive, practical, real-life experience using TNMA. The training enabled network operators to use the tools with confidence.
