Online, March 16, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Bajaj Electricals has illuminated the prestigious Wankhede stadium, which will be hosting three World Cup matches, including the final.
This is truly a proud achievement for the Engineering & Projects Business Unit (E&P BU) of Bajaj Electricals Ltd (BEL) which handles such turnkey projects.
A high quality lighting has been designed & installed in the stadium- satisfying the guidelines / requirements of ICC and other international standard on sports arena lighting. The lighting level and its uniformity not only satisfy the requirement of HDTV (High Definition Television) transmission, it also ensures a very comfortable viewing ambiance to the players / spectators / umpires by restricting glare from the entire installation.
A specially designed 2KW Metal Halide floodlights have been used in line with the international standards which has high efficient light beams coupled with internal beam-control mechanism to reduce light spillage on the surrounding areas of the stadium.
Wankhede Stadium has a main playing arena of 68.5 meter radius - with major constrain of open space inside or, outside the stadium. Because of this a
4 masts system has been adopted in lighting up the playing arena in contrast to the 6masts system commonly adopted in other international stadiums. The highmasts are of 72 meter height with 112 nos 2KW Metal Halide floodlights.
24 floodlights have been installed under the canopy to overcome the shadow being cast by the canopy & pergola profile.
The Bajaj lighting design team after illuminating more than 40 stadiums across India confidently took up the challenge and achieved the results as per the expectation of ICC / MCA.
Mr Dilip Vengsarkar, Vice President, MCA and former Captain of Indian cricket team expressed his views on the floodlighting at Wankhede stadium, "I am very happy with the lighting quality, the excellent work done by Bajaj Electricals, which has resulted in this being one of the best lit stadiums in the country today"
Mast manufacturing
The 72 meter masts installed at Wankhede are the tallest polygonal high mast structures ever used in the country for floodlighting of any stadiums. The structural design of the mast is carried in-house in line with international design practices. The masts are manufactured at the state of the art & most sophisticated CNC controlled high mast manufacturing unit at Ranjangaon, using high grade steel and under stringent quality control starting from raw material to the finished product. The bottom section of the masts is around 1900mm dia and the entire structure is totally hot-dip galvanized to make it corrosion proof against the weather conditions at Mumbai. The weight of individual mast is more than 40 tons .Due to architectural requirement special PU paint have been applied to give a soothing appearance to the giant structure ensuring the aesthetics of the stadium.
PLC/SCAD system
The entire floodlighting system will be controlled by Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) housed in individual control room for each mast, for switching of floodlights to provide lighting level suitable for individual levels of the game.
In addition to the local control, a centralized system using SCADA is also provided. The entire floodlighting system can be controlled & monitored from a centralized room housing computers, CPU, convertors etc. The connection to individual mast control room is done using fibre optic cables with necessary hardware. SCADA also provides facility to store / print data about the power consumption, current, voltage etc. and also helps in finding out whether any of the fixtures is in working condition or not.
Mast Installation and site execution
Keeping the site constraints in mind, the highly experienced & specialized execution team of E&P devised a lifting system with derrick & motorized winch mechanism customized to lift within the space available. The entire mast was erected section wise with this derrick system with a total derrick height of 78 meter.
The entire project execution was monitored by architects, consultants and PMC.
Mr. Shekhar Bajaj, CMD, Bajaj Electricals Ltd. says "As a Mumbaikar, having lit the Queens Necklace at Marine Drive years back and having lit the prestigious Bandra Worli Sealink recently, we are extremely happy that we have illuminated the Wankhede Stadium. Now the country can enjoy world class cricketing action."
Mr. Anant Bajaj, Executive Director, Bajaj Electricals says "It's a historical break thru for us at the E& P BU. With the lighting of Wankede Stadium and having done many cricket stadiums across India, we have now become the bench mark for stadium lighting in India as per international standards".
Mr Lalit Mehta, Executive President, E&P BU says "It's a proud moment for us at Bajaj Electricals to be associated with the Wankhede stadium. We have superseded our expectations and used some of the best practices to bring live action of international standards to your homes."
