Florida Funding Is Inadequate for Drug Addiction Treatment, Harbor Village Detox Comments

Harbor Village Detox Comments on Bradenton's recent article.

According to a recent article published by Bradenton on June 30th, Florida is among the lowest tiered states when it comes to providing adequate funds for behavioral and mental health funding- which is inclusive to addiction treatment. According to Bradenton Florida spends a mere $37 per capita on mental health services, as opposed to the national average of $130. Limited funds have forced the closure of many treatment beds in Florida, leaving those with untreated substance use disorders without the care they need to move on from addiction. Bradenton reports addicts sometimes resort to getting drug treatment inside of jail or emergency rooms, of which neither are equipped to adequately administer. Republican Government officials Senate majority Leader Bill Galvano and House Majority Whip Jim Boyd plan to address the mental health debacle in Florida. Harbor Village Detox is a drug and alcohol addiction treatment center directly exposed to the effects of lack of funding. The treatment center asserts providing more healthcare funding for state use will decrease spending in the long-run.

Bradenton states a bout of addiction treatment inclusive of residential and outpatient care can equate up to  $12,500 in treatment costs. Many addicts don’t have access to the health insurance coverage which makes treatment possible. A Harbor Village Detox associate comments on Florida’s inability to serve those with untreated drug and alcohol use disorders,

"Taxpayers don't want to cover the costs of treatment because there's an unfair stigma surrounding addiction shrouding not only the public's opinion, but the political spectrum as well."

“We have a lot of patients here who do get help, but for everyone of them there are ten or so who are not getting the treatment they need. Some of them have underlying circumstances which prevent this, but largely there are not many state programs which will help them front the costs to move on to a better life. Taxpayers don’t want to cover the costs of treatment because there’s an unfair stigma surrounding addiction shrouding not only the public’s opinion, but the political spectrum as well.

“If we continue to allow politics to define what science tells us is a clinical disease [addiction] we are allowing a great injustice to happen right before us. We look forward to supporting politicians who plan to make reforms to help allay the disease of addiction, as opposed to cementing its prevalence among Florida.”
