Fentanyl Laced Heroin Decimates Manatee County, Harbor Village Detox Comments

Harbor Village Detox comments on Bradenton's recent article.

In Manatee County the overdose rate has increased exponentially after first responders have found heroin laced with the deadly synthetic opiate fentanyl, which is 80 times as powerful as the morphine it’s derived of, according to Bradenton oh June 21st. Bradenton quotes firefighter Mike Dunn, “We’ve seen everything: houses, bathrooms, everything. Especially now that it’s been such an epidemic-- it’s been everywhere. Some days it slows down. Other days it picks up. It’s just tragic. It really is.” The overdose rate has increased by 106 percent, according to Bradenton, with the overdose toll tallying to 535 of May 2015. Addiction treatment accounts for a mere 3 percent of health care funding. Officials note heroin laced with fentanyl is more deadly because addicts don’t know their heroin has been tampered with, and is more potent than the substance they’re accustomed to taking- making the chances for overdose skyrocket.

Harbor Village Detox is an addiction treatment facility in Miami dedicated to helping those with drug and alcohol use disorders recover. The treatment center asserts using inside knowledge from addicts who are trying to get clean, in exchange for treatment is an avenue law enforcement should try to pinpoint the source of heroin laced fentanyl.

Drug addicts don't want to remain sick, they want help- we just need to find a way to get them the help they need to change their lives around dramatically.

According to Bradenton, law enforcement officials “do their best to shut off the supply of heroin in the area” but fall short as the demand for the addictive opiate continues to skyrocket. An associate from Harbor Village Detox comments,

“If the ultimate objective is to get addicts off of their substance of choice, we need to not only give them the means of getting help, but also make a significant dent in the source of the addictive substances putting South Florida in the predicament it’s in right now. We may be able to achieve both by deviating outside of the box, and offering treatment services in exchange for information about dealers.

“Drug addicts don’t want to remain sick, they want help- we just need to find a way to get them the help they need to change their lives around dramatically. And if we can get more drugs off the street that are responsible for causing overdoses, it’ll be a better day.

“For those who cannot offer information on sources for major drug dealings and trades, perhaps we should adopt similar policies being enacted in Gloucester [Mass.] where addicts are given treatment in exchange for giving up their tools of use without reaction from the law.”
