Family Counseling and Aftercare are Part of Orchid Recovery Center's Treatment Program

Ensuring the greatest recovery opportunities for women dealing with drug and alcohol addiction, Orchid Recovery Center offers family counseling and post-rehab treatment and support.

For many women, the weeks and even months following a stay at a drug and alcohol rehab facility can be challenging. Orchid Recovery Center, a women-only drug and alcohol rehab facility in South Florida, offers family counseling and continued post-rehab treatment and support to ensure the greatest recovery success.

Nearly seven percent of women age 12 and older have drug dependence and addiction and up to 12 percent are dealing with alcohol abuse according to a 2013 U.S. National Survey on Drug Use and Health. In addition, women face tougher challenges when dealing with addictions than compared to men. Women tend to progress much more quickly from using drugs and alcohol to dependence and find it more challenging to quit.

"It is important...that these family and friends have the knowledge and understanding of how to best provide support and have dealt with their own issues that may have resulted from the addiction."

Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center

Given these factors, Orchid offers family counseling and post-rehab planning for women and their families to make the transition from rehab to home smoother. Creating a new life after residential treatment is no simple feat, and there are a number of things that factor into what can be an overwhelming experience. These factors including situations such as dealing with the trauma of hurt relationships, practical concerns such as overdue bills or a lost job, residual pain and reminders of incidents that originally triggered drug or alcohol use, and family and friends who may also deal with the same addictions or those that have enabled.

Orchid helps family members to understand the treatment process, what triggers drug and alcohol use and strategies to be supportive. Counseling also offers time for family members to address their own issues, frustrations and concerns they experienced as a result of the addiction. Family members benefit from support groups designed for the families of alcoholics and addicts. Groups, like Al-Anon and Alateen, offer a chance to meet and gain advice and support from others who have dealt with a family member’s addiction.

“Family and friends often try to provide a support system before rehab and can be a great asset to woman after recovery,” says Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center. “It is important, however, that these family and friends have the knowledge and understanding of how to best provide support and have dealt with their own issues that may have resulted from the addiction.”

Women themselves need continued post-rehab treatment. Relapse prevention therapy works on the principle that because damaging behaviors are learned, they can be unlearned and replaced with new, healthy behaviors. Orchid blends relapse prevention therapy with traditional 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, when combined serve to address the mental and spiritual aspects of addiction as well as the physical.

“At Orchid, we also believe that long-term abstinence and relapse prevention for women is found in strong relationships,” adds Harrigan. “By creating relationships with others in the recovery community, attending group sessions and becoming an active member of the therapeutic community, women are more likely to remain drug and alcohol free after they leave rehab.”

The Orchid Model of treatment is unlike any other because of its unique focus on the needs of women suffering from the painful effects of drug addiction, alcoholism and unresolved trauma. The Orchid Model offers a variety of holistic healing methods to restore a woman’s body, mind and soul. Treatment programs are provided by highly trained female staff in an environment designed to be as healing as the treatment itself.
