Faith reporter launches religion news site in Connecticut

Journalist steps up where newspapers can't by launching online magazine

WATERBURY -- Newspapers can't afford to write about God anymore.

Neither can Tracy Simmons, but she's doing it anyway.

Simmons, who has covered the faith beat for about seven years, launched www.creedible.com in August. Creedible is an online magazine that covers religious news across Connecticut. Simmons moved from Texas to the Nutmeg State about two years ago to write for the Waterbury Republican-American, but when times got tough, the paper nixed the faith beat. That's when Simmons started building the Web site. She ripped through her savings account and took a part-time job in order to launch the site because she felt Connecticut's religious community deserved to be covered by the media. Her mission, she said, is to educate people about other faiths. She describes the site as an ecumenical news source.

Creedible, just like a newspaper Web site, has news stories, a community calendar, a worship directory, blogs, multimedia and lots and lots of feature stories. Simmons hopes to be able to run the site full time, and is trusting that the religious community will support the site with donations and advertisements.

In November, the site had 5,000 hits. That traffic is double October's stats, and the hits keep climbing. Simmons says that proves people are indeed interested in faith news.
