Estate of NYC Scenester Auction Includes Muhammad Ali & David Bowie Artworks

Portrait of Andy Warhol by Jeff Bridges

On Wednesday June 15th expect the unexpected with a celebrity & serial killer art auction at RoGallery.com Auctions at 2pm Eastern. The estate collection of Baird Jones (1955 – 2008) will be offered. Baird Jones was active in the New York City club and celebrity scene in the 1980s and 1990s, potentially working at Studio 54, The Warhol Factory, Max’s Kansas City and other similar scenester places to be. He was well known as a writer for Rush & Molloy gossip column in the New York Daily News, Artnet, and an art curator for Webster Hall in the East Village.

Baird Jones was a noted collector of artworks created by celebrities, such as Muhammad Ali, David Bowie, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Jeff Bridges. The sale will also include many rare drawings by noted serial killers like Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy and Richard Ramirez. The collection was donated to one of Baird’s best friend ‘Hoop’ a.k.a. Stephen Douglas Hooper, an artist himself famous for his ‘Hoopmobiles’ art cars that could be seen around New York City in the 80s and 90s.  Hoop himself passed away in 2012 and this will be the first time any of these artworks will have been at market.

Baird Jones has said of his collection, "A handful of celebrities have made serious money in the art biz. [...] But celebrities like these are the exceptions. When Sotheby's auctioned off a trove of Muhammad Ali memorabilia five years ago (quoted from 2006), everything went wildly above estimate -- except for Ali's artworks, which fell significantly short of their presale evaluations. The people who take art seriously are rarely the same people who care about celebrityhood."

The auction will feature over 300 lots of paintings, drawings, prints, memorabilia and other collectibles. The opening and reserve prices are quite low for most artworks starting around $100.
