“I am so proud to be a part of this community,” says Kara Murray of St. Albert, Alberta, who has been providing relief in the wake of the Ft. McMurray fire. “I have never seen such a wholehearted response. It is a real inspiration to see how the province has rallied to ensure everyone is cared for during this crisis.”

The Fort McMurray fire began May 1. Three weeks later, it continues to rage, crossing into Saskatchewan and consuming everything in its wake. Mandatory evacuations continue to be in effect for Fort McMurray, Anzac, Fort McKay First Nation, Fort McMurray First Nation and industrial camps and facilities.

At a press conference this morning, Alberta Emergency Management Agency and Alberta Wildfire reported more than 1,200 firefighters are on the scene and an additional 500 are expected to join them shortly. Some 50 helicopters and 170 pieces of heavy equipment and bulldozers are working to keep the fire contained in key areas around cities and industrial sites and to prevent its spread into the Athabasca Oil Sands Project. Meanwhile, work has begun to restore basic infrastructure in Fort McMurray and evacuees may begin to return home beginning June 1 provided there is adequate air quality and necessities are in place by then. Emergency workers are on the scene to make that happen. The hospital will need to reopen first along with stores, banks and gas stations.

Murray, a Scientology Volunteer Minister who has been packaging and distributing donated goods in an Edmonton shelter, has never seen such an outpouring of help from private individuals, businesses and the government. “It is a privilege to be part of this relief effort,” she says.
