"The pendulum is swinging back into our laps in terms of what is appropriate care for pain. A realization that opioids are not the panacea they were once promised is pushing the regulatory and insurance industries to allow and even promote interventional approaches to pain relief."

William Porter McRoberts, Medical Director of Pain Medicine, Holy Cross Hospital

With 15 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. McRoberts brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his areas of expertise, interventional pain medicine, pain surgery and neuromodulation for pain relief. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in pain medicine, Dr. McRoberts said:

"Doctors focus on the underlying components of health. But what I love about pain medicine is that it not only focuses on these underlying components, but also focuses on what patients experience. And when you focus on the experience, you can change a lot more lives a lot more quickly."

As a thought-leader in his industry, Dr. McRoberts is renowned not only as a physician, but also as a researcher and consultant in pain medicine. He has authored numerous articles published in peer review journals, while he has presented findings from his pioneering research at prominent conferences throughout the United States. Beyond his research, Dr. McRoberts offers his expertise as a consultant to many of the leading biotech and medical device companies such as St. Jude Medical, Nevro, Spinal Modulation, Vertiflex, Bioness, Inc. and Medtronic, with whom his work has led to the development of several innovate medical devices and products.

His prominence in the field gives Dr. McRoberts a unique vantage point from which to follow prevailing trends in medicine. In particular, he is paying close attention to the potential effects of recent legislation on healthcare delivery and access. He noted:

"The pendulum is swinging back into our laps in terms of what is appropriate care for pain. A realization that opioids are not the panacea they were once promised is pushing the regulatory and insurance industries to allow and even promote interventional approaches to pain relief. There have been many changes in terms of political constraints that have affected patients' access to physicians, both with Medicare and other insurance plans, so much so that I think we're on the precipice of moving towards an 'Uberization', so to speak, in medicine. And my hope is that this engenders equal access for all people so that everybody can have access to physicians, and allows us to transcend the insurance companies and hospitals, and ultimately partner with them as opposed to being controlled by them. Now more than ever, we need a 'patient-centric' approach as opposed to the 'population-based' approach being pursued by the Affordable Care Act."

Dr. McRoberts is the Medical Director of Interventional Spine and Pain Medicine at the Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is the President of Anodyne Research Inc. and Anodyne Consulting, Inc., serves on the Peripheral Nerve Field Advisory Board and provides editorial services for Neuromodulation: Technology at the Neural InterfacePain Medicine, and Journal of Interventional Neuroradiology, and is on the faculty of the Pain Education Society.

Dr. McRoberts is a member of the North American Spine Society, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, Florida Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, International Neuromodulation Society, North American Neuromodulation Society, American, Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the West Virginia Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.
