Dr Niraj Vora, orthopedic surgeon has conducted a correctional surgery recently at SL Raheja Fortis Hospital, Mahim, Mumbai for a 36 year old patient Ritu Paul. She lived with a shorter right leg than left leg for about 21 years. She is a veteran teacher in Punjab who underwent the corrective surgery to restore parity in the length of her legs.

The major problem that Ritu was facing was her right leg was a good six inches shorter than her left leg. Ritu Paul was suffering from a severe pain of mysterious bacteria that was eating up her right hip right from the age of 11. The cause was infection found in her right hip that gave her a severe shooting pain while sleeping one night, when she approached orthopedic doctors, where she was treated for infection and aspirating pus for few months. Later she was bedridden as the infection spread vigorously and apparently made her stay at home stopping her schooling after class five.
The hip bone deteriorated and it eventually fused with the pelvic bone. Ritu could barely walk as she experienced a severe pain due to the stiffness in the fused hip. She however tried to cope up and made her mind strong to walk using six-inch heeled wedge sandal to balance the difference in the height of her both legs. She consulted so many orthopedic doctors and surgeons in Punjab, and none of them showed her a positive note of correction in her legs. She continued to leave with pain strongly, got married and had a baby too but always wanted to get treated for her legs.

Later when she got to meet Dr Niraj Vora, she started gaining a hope for her dream of having the right foot. Dr Niraj Vora has handled Correctional Surgery for Deteriorated Hip of Ritu Paul at SL Raheja Fortis Hospital, Mahim. Explaining about the medical condition and treatment applied, Dr Niraj Vora said "As the hip bone fuses with the pelvis it moves up from the ground towards the body. The pelvis tilted towards the left of the body laterally, resulting in the right foot becoming literally air-borne,"

He further explained that Ritu had suffered heavy bone fusion, unlike hip replacement surgery case where the cartilage has just about worn off and bone diffusion is in the initial stages. He said, Ritu's fused bony part was sawed off carefully, and ceramic ball and socket joint was kept in that area. The muscles and ligaments had to be stretched to restore the normal length of the foot.

Ritu, the young teacher today is at a position to fulfill her fetish for footwear after dragging her feet with the help of aided sandals for over a decade. Ritu expressed her happiness and said "For all these years I was mocked about my uneven feet and the trauma was intense. Now the pain is gone and I can live a normal life. I have bought more than 60 pairs of footwear."
