"We're at the forefront of trying to identify new or novel strategies and techniques for managing chronic pain without the requirement to rely upon narcotic analgesics. The last several years, our whole concept has been to move away from narcotics."

Kenneth Candido, M.D., Chairman & President, Chicago Anesthesia Pain Specialists

With 32 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Candido brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his area of expertise, pain management. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in this specialization, Dr. Candido said:

"The two greatest fears I had growing up were the fear of pain and the fear of death. And I thought that the best way to conquer those fears would be to address them directly which would be to have the greatest amount of knowledge I could about prolonging life. For selfish reasons and then obviously for altruistic reasons ones I learned what really was at stake. In the process I found methodologies for managing chronic pain conditions or limiting the acute pain conditions from subsequently becoming chronic. So it was my life's mission to try to find the things that I feared the greatest and then address them head on."

As a thought-leader in his industry, Dr. Candido served for many years as a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologist's Committee on Chronic Pain. He was unique in being the only individual in the society's forty year history to ever Chair the American Society of Regional Anesthesia's Annual Meeting twice in a single year. He was the Fellowship Director and Chairman and Professor of the Pain Program at Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois for many years. He also was the Chair of Acute Pain at Northwestern University Medical Center in Chicago and the Chairman of Trauma Anesthesia and Program Director of the Anesthesiology Residency Program at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

More recently, Dr. Candido was named a Section Editor of the journal "Pain Physician", and was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians." He has been a frequent Visiting Professor at some of the nation's most prestigious centers of higher medical education, including the Cleveland Clinic, Cornell University, Rush Medical School, the University of Illinois, Rutgers Medical School, Case Western Reserve, The Hospital for Special Surgery, and many others.

With this prominence in his field, Dr. Candido invariably keeps a watchful eye on prevailing trends in pain management. In particular, he is paying close attention to an increasing dependence on opioids. But as a well-renowned pioneer in pain management, Dr. Candido is looking to alternative treatments to allay what he regards as a spreading epidemic. He noted:

"We are in accordance with the fact that opioid medications, which are narcotics of course, are being over utilized by the vast majority of Americans suffering from chronic pain. And it's been pointed out by multiple entities that even though Americans constitute a relatively small percentage of the world's population, three to five percent, we consume anywhere from eighty-five to ninety percent of the world's narcotics and clearly that's led to iatrogenic over medication of our population and leads to about eighty opioid related overdose deaths every single day in this country. So we're at the forefront of trying to identify new or novel strategies and techniques for managing chronic pain without the requirement to rely upon narcotic analgesics. The last several years, our whole concept has been to move away from narcotics."
