Dr. Harold J Lawler Shares Innovative Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Methods in Florida

Dr. Harold J Lawler III, an Occupational Medicine & General Preventive Medicine physician has discovered a new method to treat patients with substance abuse. Dr. Lawler continues to be one of Florida’s most trusted physicians from whom patients and colleagues continue to seek education and guidance.

For the past few years, Dr. Lawler began speaking with rehabilitation clinics throughout Florida to share his research as well as interrate the importance of monitoring prescription drug usage. Dr. Lawler had this to say on the topic: “While it is not beneficial to assume the worst in our patients, it is vital that we [physicians] take responsibility for recognizing both the history and the likelihood our patients could overuse medication.”

Dr. Lawler continues, “Now, I go a step further and ensure my patients complete a more detailed medical history survey as well as have my team interview their past surgeries and other medical conditions that might have required pain medication. If my team and I uncover signs that a patient has or could misuse the medication I prescribe, I may adjust or implement strict limitations on his or her medication.”

The results of Dr. Harold Lawler’s new more rigorous policies significantly reduced the amount of prescription drug abuse throughout his practice and the practice of doctors he mentors. “It continues to work very well. Over the past 12 months I have seen an 80% decrease in the number of refill requests,” Dr. Lawler added “... There are several ways to treat patients that help them focus on wellness and not the disease. We focus on informing each patient of how the body works and repairs itself. In the presence of misusing medication, natural healing is stunted.”

Jennifer Howard from Sarasota, Florida, is a patient of Dr. Lawler and shared this: “Before Dr. Lawler took the time to explain how my back pain was a sign that my muscles needed additional time to heal and how changing my diet, stretching and drinking plenty of water would improve the area, I thought that medication would take care of the healing, too. Now that I understand the whole system, it makes me think twice before requesting additional medication. More people should know about this.”

It seems Dr. Harold Lawler’s message is spreading rapidly throughout the Sarasota, Florida area. The community and rehab centers he regularly visits also see improvement in their patient’s response to medication and their willingness to discuss why the misuse of medication and/or alcohol was largely related to a lack of clarity of how the mind and body work synergistically to keep organs operating with precision.

Dr. Lawler’s future plans are to start a new book on the connection between the brain and body and how it reacts before, during and after prescription drug abuse. While no state-wide tours are in the plans, we wouldn’t put anything past Harold J. Lawler III, M.D.
