Diversification, From Chemical Manufacturing To Transport, Has Enabled Coogee Chemicals' Success Since 1971

Coogee Chemicals has been successful for nearly 40 years because of diversification, from chemical manufacturing to transport.

(SAN DIEGO, CA) - In an interview with Manufacturing Digital, Coogee Chemicals CEO and Director Phil Thick explains how diversification tactics are employed to keep the chemical manufacturing company thriving in the Asia Pacific Region.
Coogee Chemicals operates in three states in Australia, as well as Malaysia, and its business includes chemical manufacturing, chemicals storage and chemicals transportation. Coogee runs four tank terminals and a new $12 million terminal is currently under construction in Gladstone, Queensland.

"Transport is a key element of our business because of the nature of the hazardous chemicals we handle. Many customers don't want to do that themselves and there aren't a lot of companies that want to take on that high-risk task. Coogee will basically handle anything. That's what we've built our reputation on. That's where our expertise lies and that helps us to look after the customer predominantly across the whole supply chain from import right through to final use," Thick says.

Coogee has maintained success by focusing on niche markets, such as methanol, a small market but one where Coogee has captured most of the business. It operates a methanol plant in Melbourne, Victoria that produces 80,000 tons of methanol per year, and supplies almost the total of the Australian domestic methanol market.
