Contest the Gun Run, Cape Town's historic inner-city marathon

Entries close on 2 October 2010 for the annual Gun Run, a 21.1km half marathon which winds its way past some of the most spectacular tourist attractions in the South African city of Cape Town.

Apart from the sheer exhilaration of completing this premier annual race, contestants will also be asked to throw their formidable weight behind a crucial non profit organisation that has the difficult mission of assisting the growing numbers of street children to repair their broken, hopeless lives.

A popular event since 1993, this year's Gun Run will follow an entirely new route which offers international and local visitors an opportunity of viewing eclectic scenic, cultural and historic hot spots 'on the run'.

The scenic route

The race starts at Beach Road, Mouille Point, home to the distinctive red and white candy striped Lighthouse, a city landmark built in around 1842. It then traverses the brand new precinct of the Cape Town Stadium, an impressive architectural feat of the World Cup 2010.

From there, it's on to the entertainment hub of the city and the most visited attraction in South Africa: The V&A Waterfront, a successful commercial venture boasting a host of sea-side taverns, fine food restaurants, trendy boutiques and luxury World Class hotels. It is also the choice destination for sunset champagne cruises, helicopter flips and the enchanting Two Oceans Aquarium.
Atlantic Seaboard

The route promptly doubles back on itself and follows Beach Road past Green Point, the centre of the gay and lesbian community, and Sea Point, renowned for its high rise apartment buildings and Victorian promenade. It will then head for the affluent Atlantic Seaboard, which nestles between the majestic Twelve Apostles and the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean.

Table Mountain National Park

It's then time to turn tail and head back to the bustle of the city. The return route offers magnificent views of the ocean, Robben Island beyond and the crags and crannies of the Table Mountain National Park. This is one of the only inner-city national parks in the world, and it's celebrated for its prolific and diverse Cape floral kingdom. Athletes could be forgiven for stopping and drinking in the natural splendour of the Cape during the race.
