Chairman of Citibank Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso Awarded Honorary Doctorate by Alma Mater, Aston University

Olayemi Cardoso

The Chairman of Citibank Nigeria Limited, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, received an honorary Doctorate of Business Administration from Aston University for his outstanding contribution to business and society.

The award was presented by the University's Chancellor, Sir John Sunderland at the conferment ceremony on July 20th  attended by Clare Short, former U.K. Secretary of State for International Development.

In his address at the occasion, Mr. Cardoso highlighted the importance of graduates having mentors to guide them in their careers, particularly encouraging women graduates to do so with organisations increasingly embracing the goal of gender parity. He also urged graduates at the ceremony to engage in life-long learning and to prepare for the digital revolution set to transform the world of work.

Mr. Cardoso, a career banker and development policy expert, started out in banking with Chase Manhattan and became a member of the founding team of Citibank Nigeria in 1984. Following an exemplary career in banking and business, Mr. Cardoso went into public service in 1999 as the pioneer Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget for Lagos State, the economic nerve centre of Nigeria, when the country returned to a democratically elected government after many years of military rule and economic mismanagement.  A highly unusual career move for a business person at the time, Mr Cardoso said he felt it was essential to contribute one's knowledge and experience to bringing about reforms that were needed, and other notable professionals in Nigeria have since been encouraged to follow his lead.

After his period in public service, Olayemi became a Mason Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School earning a Master's Degree in Public Administration, specialising in Public Policy and Management. Subsequently, he served on the board of Chevron Oil Nigeria PLC and became a member of Citibank Nigeria’s board audit committee. He also chaired the World Bank’s LMDGP project as well as the Bill and Media Gates Foundation and DFID- funded, EFInA, a financial inclusion organisation.

Mr. Cardoso, an influential advisor has skillfully combined private sector, public service and development roles working on key initiatives with international development and finance institutions including Ford Foundation, DFID and the World Bank. He is a member of the Belgium- based think tank, Cities Alliance, a global partnership formed by the World Bank and UN habitat to tackle urban issues.

Mr. Cardoso speaks regularly at institutions such as University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School and Harvard Kennedy School.

He became the Chairman of Citibank Nigeria in 2010.
