Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity is Building Communities One Home at a Time
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, January 10, 2018 (Newswire.com) - Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing for hardworking, limited income families. In its 30th year of operations, the local organization celebrates the completion of its 900th home. Habitat homes are all sold at cost and with zero interest mortgages.
The organization’s premise is simple yet life-changing. The late Founder and Former President of Habitat for Humanity, Millard Fuller, would say ‘everyone deserves and simple, decent, affordable place to live.’ This message deeply resonated with Ann Felton Gilliland, CEO of Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, when she joined the nonprofit in 1990.
“When I was called to serve Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, the organization’s assets were of the mustard seed variety,” said Ann Felton Gilliland. “We began the affordable housing ministry without any paid staff, an office the size of a broom closet, in a church basement – all without a sustainable revenue stream.”
Many years later, Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity has served over 900 Oklahoma City metro families.
“Despite the limited resources and revenue challenges we had in that first year, we built three new homes for families,” said Ms. Gilliland. “Now, we build an average of 45-50 new homes each year.”
Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity relies on volunteers, sponsors, individual donors, and sweat equity from home recipients to successfully complete each new build.
“Based on the 2016 findings from the Oklahoma Finance Housing Agency, over 66,000 affordable housing units will be needed by the year 2020,” said Ms. Gilliland. “And Habitat will be there to meet that demand head on. We will be part of the solution but we cannot do it alone.”
