BlackDoctor.org Executive Editor, Sandria Washington, Receives '40 Under 40 Leaders in Health' Award
Chicago, IL , April 14, 2016 (Newswire.com) - BlackDoctor.org’s Executive Editor, Sandria Washington, was recently named by The National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) as one of its ‘40 Under 40 Leaders in Health.’ The 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health Awards, which took place during the 2016 NMQF Leadership Summit on Health Disparities and CBC Spring Brain Trust in Washington, DC, honors 40 influential young minority leaders who make a difference in health care. In her career and personal endeavors, Sandria has demonstrated leadership in and commitment to community volunteerism, philanthropy and health advocacy.
Sandria Washington, a proud South Side Chicago native, has amassed an impressive 14 year media career as a writer, editor and publishing executive. In her current role as Executive Editor and a Senior Writer at BlackDoctor.org, the #1 healthy lifestyle website for African Americans, Sandria oversees the production of culturally-relevant health content that touches more than 24 million readers each month – a daily charge that provides life-changing and life-saving content to the people who need it most.
Since joining BlackDoctor.org in 2014, the company – now in its 11th year – has grown exponentially under Sandria’s editorial direction. In July 2015, BlackDoctor.org became the first health website to reach 1 million Facebook followers.
Sandria is a longtime volunteer with several local and national organizations and has facilitated youth empowerment workshops for The Metropolitan Board of the Chicago Urban League, Young Women’s Leadership Charter School and Illinois Caucus of Adolescent Health. In 2012, Sandria was awarded a competitive Harriet Tubman Trailblazer Fellowship by the groundbreaking health organization GirlTrek and has served as a leader within the organization for more than four years, empowering Black women to reclaim their health, families and communities through walking. As a certified yoga teacher (CYT) she has taught weekly yoga classes on the South Side of Chicago at Gary Comer Youth Center, as well as workshops for Chicago Public Schools, Columbia College and nonprofits throughout the city. Sandria is a graduate of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign with a B.S. in Advertising.
“I’m truly honored and humbled to be recognized by my peers and The National Minority Quality Forum. There is a need for more Black voices and advocates at the table when it comes to conversations about our health. I think about my parents – both of them died before the age of 66 – and I think about their health challenges and all of the health information that never made it to them. I’m blessed to be a messenger,” said Sandria.
Reggie Ware, CEO of BlackDoctor.org, shared, “Sandria’s award for The 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health is a source of great pride to BlackDoctor.org, and highlights her dedication to making a difference in the community.”
Sandria is also a 2016 recipient of the Chicago Defender ‘Women of Excellence’ Award and a ‘40 Under 40’ award in 2015 from the nonprofit Demoiselle 2 Femme.
