Most of WD's drives can be used with Windows or Mac PCs. The Elements drive comes pre-formatted for Windows, but is easily reformatted to work with a Mac by downloading a utility from WD's site. It is compatible with a variety of operating systems, including Mac OS X, Windows 7, XP, and Vista.

The drive transfers data using the USB 2.0 protocol and runs at a max speed of around 480 Mb/sec. With a rotational speed of 7200 RPM and seek time of 8.9 ms, the drive is fast enough to handle just about any challenge you can throw at it. There is plenty of room for your favorite movies, music, and photos and/or to back up your most critical files.

The drive is small (7" x 4.9" x 1.4") and light (just over 2 pounds). It runs quite cool and has several energy-savings features. It even ships in recyclable packaging.

The Western Digital Elements 2TB comes with a separate power cord, so it's not powered through the USB cable like many of WD's portable drives.

The drive does not come with resident backup utilities. The vast majority of people prefer to use the backup utilities that come with their operating system anyway, so this is not much of a "con" in their opinion.

The drive comes with a 1-year limited warranty for US purchasers. The warranty is fairly standard and does not include recovery of lost data.
