Avid Gamers To Battle It Out At Singapore Expo

Winners will represent Singapore at the World Cyber Games 2010 Grand Final while the best of the best in Asia battle it out at the Asian Championship

30 June 2010, Singapore. Singapore's most versatile events venue will transfigure into a temporary 'warzone' when more than 1,000 gamers battle tirelessly for twelve hours per day over three days for a chance to represent Singapore at the World Cyber Games (WCG) Grand Final. From 9 to 11 July, these e-sportsmen will combat one another at Singapore Expo's Hall 6B to clinch the golden tickets to Los Angeles, USA, where the high-octane showdown will ensue.

Regarded as the world's largest competitive video gaming event, WCG 2010 is the ultimate proving ground for elite gamers across the globe, where participants will battle it out in nine separate tournaments (Blackshot, Counter-strike 1.6, DOTA All-Stars, FIFA 2010, Left 4 Dead 2 and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne on PC and Forza Motorsport 3, Guitar Hero 5 and Tekken 6 on XBOX 360).

Happening alongside the Singapore final is the equally if not more exhilarating WCG Asian Championship, where the crème de la crème of approximately 104 players from Australia, Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam will contend with one another in DOTA All-Stars, FIFA 2010 and Forza Motorsport 3. This additional pan-regional competition was first launched in 2006 to raise WCG's standing as the leading e-sporting event amongst regional IT industry watchers.

The two concurrent gaming events are expected to attract over 70,000 spectators to Singapore Expo.

Electrifying Singapore's ever-growing games industry

The annual WCG has contributed significantly to building a critical mass of online gamers and raised the profile of cyber games in Singapore over the years since its launch in Singapore in 2001 . Many international game developers, distributors and publishers have set up studios in Singapore and more young Singaporeans are expressing a keen interest in game development and professional gaming. To further this
industry, Singapore's Media Development Authority has set aside S$20 million to implement the GAME+ programme over three years, so as to better support the whole games value chain from concept development through to market strategies .

"In the past decade, there has been remarkable growth and interest in WCG,'' says Mr Herman Ng, Managing Director of Rapture Gaming Pte Ltd, the organiser of WCG 2010. ''With gaming becoming a part of mainstream culture, WCG has widened its appeal by expanding to mobile devices and gaming entertainment consoles and will feature over a hundred players and thousands of spectators at the Asian Championship. Happening in Singapore, home to several international and regional game developer studios, this edition promises to be one of the best WCG events yet."

Chandran Nair, Deputy General Manager of Singex Venues Pte Ltd, is confident that this relentless gaming trend will bring more gaming industry events to Singapore's sunny shores. He says, "With Singapore racing to become the regional hub for interactive digital media, there will definitely be more trade events focusing on this growing market in time to come. International game developers, professional gamers and technology experts will likely gather here to share ideas about the future of e-sports and their cultural relevance to society at conferences, seminars and workshops. Singapore Expo, with its sound track record in hosting communications, media and technology trade and consumer events such as CommunicAsia, Licence2Play and SITEX, is set to attract more events such as WCG in the near future."
