Author Hilla Schroeder Kelly's new book 'The Sketchbook' serves as a time capsule, transporting readers through the history of the author's family

Recent release "The Sketchbook" from Newman Springs Publishing author Hilla Schroeder Kelly takes readers on a journey through time into a period of both deep affection and deprivation of the author and her family. The book is based on fact as told from the perspective of the artist's daughter, who is the keeper of the sketches and love letters, now becoming more fragile as time passes.

Hilla Schroeder Kelly, a teacher for 34 years, has completed her new book "The Sketchbook": a gripping and potent work that captures the history of the author's family, highlighting the years many Germans and Italians spent in internment camps in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) during the Second World War.

Author Hilla Schroeder Kelly writes, "The memory of my father and the legacy of his sketchbook makes it imperative that I put down in words our experiences living in a quiet backwater and the sudden disruption of normalcy in the wake of the Second World War. Could this be just another story about those historic years? Perhaps, but this one has an odd twist in which these events did not take place in the actual war arena but in Southern Africa, a world away from any conflict. Admittedly, these African countries were a part of the British Commonwealth during that period, but so many of the German and Italian settlers were second-, third-, and even fourth-generation citizens."

Published by Newman Springs Publishing, Hilla Schroeder Kelly's meaningful work depicts how the loss of her father set the author's family, her mother and brother, on a trajectory of homelessness, tempered by the resolute determination of the mother to have her children succeed against these odds.

Readers who wish to experience this moving work can purchase "The Sketchbook" at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iBooks Store, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble.
