In an excerpt from one letter, Roe shares, "I met a girl; she pulls at my heartstrings. I write to her every day. We are not able to see each other often enough. I want her to know how much I love her. She lives with her parents and many siblings in New York City. There are five sisters: Maude, Catherine, Winifred, Lilly, Florence, and also little Mary, who died before I met my Lilly; three brothers: Andrew, Edmund, and Thomas.
Andrew Hennelly, Lilly's father, named two of his three boys after his brothers, and the oldest is called Andrew. The uncles stayed in Ireland; Andrew immigrated to the states.
They are a large Irish Catholic family, and I love everything about them. So many girls, but Lilly is the one for me. I come from a German Catholic and Irish, small, and very serious family. I have one sister, Bessie, and we are very close.
I worry. Europe is on fire. Very soon, that fire will engulf the world, and as much as the American people and especially the American government pretend this will not happen, it is happening. Did I mention I worry!"
