Atlanta Boom Volleyball Institute (Boom) Director, Arleen Hughes was selected for the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s 2014 Women Who Mean Business Award. The highly selective award recognizes 15 of the region's most influential women. Honorees represent women from every profession who exemplify a dedication to community service, blaze trails in their industries, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

At the ceremony in Atlanta, October 23, Mrs. Hughes received the honor in recognition of her commitment to enhancing the lives of many through the sportsmanship, dedication, teaming and mentoring of championship level volleyball.

During her tenure of over 16 years, Boom has facilitated more than 230 collegiate scholarships for students who only thought of college as a dream and not their reality. The Boom curriculum pushes young girls to aim beyond short term and instant gratification goals. Their mission is to develop them into strong contributors to the community by developing professional and personal skills through volleyball.

Hughes’ started the program with her business and life partner, Del Hughes, a fellow volleyball enthusiast and champion. Their doors opened with 9 girl mentees from Atlanta’s inner city and grew to more than 250 students achieving academic as well as sportsmanship success.

“We started our program because we were saddened by the lack of opportunity and low self-esteem growing rampantly in schools we officiated,” says Mrs. Hughes. “We grew weary of watching talented, athletic and enthusiastic young ladies fail because they just never had “high level” instruction and as a result, “high level” opportunities. We decided to make a difference.” Now 16 seasons later, the Boom difference has produced national and international championships. Last year alone the program captured 20 tournament championships, and several division championships at AAU Nationals while qualifying two teams for the USA Volleyball Girls National Championships, and produced over 15 scholarships to universities like Syracuse, South Carolina State, Coastal Carolina and Georgia Tech.

In addition to the October 23 awards ceremony, honorees will be profiled in a special supplement of the Atlanta Business Chronicle. For a full list of the 2014 honorees, go to http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/event/102561
