Apex Minecraft Hosting Announces Third Annual $2,000 Minecraft Scholarship

The Minecraft Scholarship can be applied towards a student's tuition for their next semester of college.

Apex Minecraft Hosting, a leading Minecraft server hosting company, has just announced their third annual Minecraft Scholarship has opened to applications. This is the world's only Minecraft scholarship available. The company will provide one student a $2,000 scholarship that can be used towards their tuition for their next semester of college. The application process will be open to interested applicants until July 31, 2018.

Students who are citizens of the United States, currently enrolled in college or high school, and carry a 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible to apply. To apply, students should visit the Apex Minecraft Hosting website and fill out the form. The application process includes a 500-word essay, highlighting their opinion on how Minecraft can be a positive influence on their education and career development.

"We believe that Minecraft can play an important role in education and are proud to be able to offer a scholarship to enable students to focus on their studies and career goals," says Seth Mattox, Founder of Apex Minecraft Hosting. "With a focus on education, we also support students and youth in the Minecraft community at our world's colleges and schools by offering a lifelong discount of 25 percent for all students with a valid school email address. In addition, the company provides free servers to libraries and university."

Ryan Wheeler was selected as the Minecraft Scholarship winner in 2017. In his winning essay, he touched on why Minecraft is a great educational tool. In part of his essay, Wheeler noted, "I learned how to code and fell in love with it because of visualization. This is precisely why Minecraft is a fantastic way to teach how to code. Minecraft is visually appealing and fantastically open to creativity and ingenuity. This makes it a perfect platform to transform the abstract into visual."

Ryan Wheeler's essay highlights the educational potential of Minecraft and its unique function of bridging the learning curve for prospective computer scientists. The objective of Apex Hosting's education and scholarship programs seek to attract more prodigious young people like Ryan Wheeler, who explained, "My first semester I didn’t look at the art of code, I looked at words in a line. ... I learned how to code and fell in love with it because of visualization. This is precisely why Minecraft is a fantastic way to teach how to code. Minecraft is visually appealing and fantastically open to creativity and ingenuity. This makes it a perfect platform to transform the abstract into visual." Minecraft has established itself as a massively popular game, but Wheeler's Apex Scholarship winning essay taps into something deeper. For prodigious young visual or kinesthetic learners with an eye for aesthetics and texture, the computer science domain is unappealing. Apex Minecraft Hosting continues to utilize Minecraft's unique application in the learning environment as a tool to teach spatial thinking, basic 3D conceptualizations, and mathematics.
