The very first RIMPAC was held in 1971, and it took place annually for the first few years. In 1974, it became biannual. The massive Oahu event includes 50 warships, 200 planes, special forces teams, medical ships, and tens of thousands of troops. RIMPAC is headed by the Navy’s Pacific Fleet. The Coast Guard, the Marines, and the Hawaii National Guard also help lead the event.
Other countries either participate in or observe the RIMPAC exercises at the invitation of the United States.
