Alpha Micro Enhances USB Portfolio With Addition Of FTDI's Latest Serial To USB Modules

FTDI's DB9-USB-RS232 modules offer ideal solution for migrating legacy DB9 based RS232 applications to USB 2.0

Alpha Micro Components (www.alphamicro.net), the independent franchised distributor of electronic components, today announced that it has added the DB9-USB-RS232 module from Future Technology Devices International (FTDI) to its portfolio of Serial to USB solutions. It is the ideal solution for upgrading and migrating to USB 2.0 for a range of legacy applications which feature RS232 interfaces including audio products, point of sale terminals, vehicle diagnostics and security and fire panels.

The DB9-USB-RS232 modules are designed to replace an existing DB9 and have the pin-for-pin factor for male or female RS232 connectors. It is engineered as a drop-in solution, therefore removing any need for a processor overhead or embedded USB stack. This will provide a full USB slave interface which requires no external circuitry. FTDI's innovative, robust and reliable design makes it a simple, fast and cost-effective solution for migrating legacy equipment.

Christos Papakyriacou, Managing Director of Alpha Micro Components, commented: "FTDI has established itself as the global leader in USB connectivity solutions and the DB9-USB-RS232 will further enhance this reputation. Alpha Micro has worked successfully with FTDI for the past 14 years and its products have a very solid reputation within the engineering community due to their reliability and robustness. These high speed devices provide easy USB connectivity for a number of legacy applications, making them the ideal solution for designers looking to extend the lifecycle of their existing products."

This module uses a standard USB-MINI-B connector for connection to an upstream host or hub port. As with all FTDI modules, the DB9-USB-RS232 is available using the royalty free USB driver which suits the application best including Microsoft Windows Server 2008, 2003, Vista, XP 2000, Linux and Mac OS X. Additional features include:

• Works with USB 1.1 and 2.0 host and hub ports
• Incorporates the industry standard FTDI chip set & device drivers for maximum compatibility
• Powered by USB port - no external power adaptor needed
• Operating temperature of -40oC to 85oC
• Serial port speed up to 1MB per second
• Installs as a standard Windows CM port
