The fourth AgroSpace workshop will be held May 20-21, 2010 in Sperlonga, Italy. The biennial event is organised by Aero Sekur - a specialist in safety systems and flexible structures, in conjunction with Federlazio. Pioneering world leaders in the field of AgroSpace science and technology will come together at Sperlonga to be updated on latest advancements in AgroSpace and share knowledge to feed both the current world and worlds of the future.

The event is understood to be the only platform to bring together the international scientific, engineering and agricultural food production communities involved in space and Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) whose goals are to apply technologies for the benefit of earth and space applications.

Presentations by international keynote speakers will include Dr. Michael Dixon, from the Research Center on Controlled Environments (Canada), Ing. Peter van Weel, Wageningen Research Center (The Netherlands) and Dr. Gene Giacomelli, Director for Controlled Environment Agriculture Center (CEAC) and Professor in Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering at the University of Arizona, USA.

Round table discussions will be the focus of workshops that will follow the presentations: objectives of the debates will include establishing an inter-disciplinary programme to share knowledge of the challenges of space life support and earth food production applications.

Commenting, Aero Sekur President Dott. Ing. Rossignoli said:
"The 2010 AgroSpace workshop will focus on food production systems facing the demands and requirements of a hazardous space environment or a resource-limited earth biosphere: these environments have similar goals of life-support and maintenance of quality of life.

"It will be an important forum to address capabilities ranging from traditional farms with greenhouse controlled environments to the systems for urban and space agriculture that are under development. We will look at expectations for these solutions and how these have increased in response to consumer demand for high quality, locally grown, safe foods with efficient use of controlled inputs and reduced outputs to the environment."

Specialist contributors to the field including scientists, politicians and members of the food production industry are invited to attend the workshop. Attendees will benefit from first hand information from global pioneers in the field of AgroSpace. Additionally, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in discussions with experts from different technical arenas and cultures to progress solutions for those challenged with food supply both in space and on earth.

Footnote: Aero Sekur is recognised for its pioneering work in space and defence, particularly in the fields of low launch weight, flexible, inflatable structures. The company is working with Dr. Gene Giacomelli to produce a lunar greenhouse. A parallel Aero Sekur initiative is playing a key role in a project entitled 'BaoLab' which, as a self-sustaining method of growing plants, offers major environmental advantages.

Federlazio is the SME industrial association for the Lazio region of Italy.
