Act® Improvement of +14 Points in Reading and +7 Points in English Lands Homeschooled Senior, Garrison Lowery, a 25 Act® Composite Score
BROOKHAVEN, Miss., May 18, 2020 (Newswire.com) - Speaking with student Garrison Lowery, one immediately hears resounding drive and motivation in his voice. Then you learn this is a young man with Cerebral Palsy (CP) who is homeschooled and in pursuit of great things, which includes going to college and entering the medical field. Perhaps an immediate question is what drives him? His mother, Melissa Lowery, will tell you immediately he gets his strength from his faith in God. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4.13.
Garrison took the ACT without any formal test prepping and he earned a composite score of 20 on his first attempt without any assistance. After using Jumpstart Test Prep to prepare for his second attempt of the ACT exam, he improved his composite score to an impressive 25!
"We learned from other family and friends about how the Jumpstart online review had helped many other students improve their score," said Melissa. "On his first attempt, Garrison just studied some math and things on his own and just took the test. This baseline let us know where we stood and we knew we definitely wanted a higher score than a 20 composite."
The Circumstances
Garrison experienced bullying at a young age due to his inability to play sports when he was in the 4th grade. So, his family decided that life was too short for him to have to deal with that additional stress along with his disability. Homeschooling was a new adventure for Melissa and Garrison, but they quickly realized that Garrison had the drive and motivation to succeed in homeschooling, so that was all the reassurance the Lowery family needed.
Cerebral Palsy is considered a neurological disorder caused by a non-progressive brain injury or malformation that occurs while the child's brain is under development. Cerebral Palsy primarily affects body movement and muscle coordination. Though Cerebral Palsy can be defined, having Cerebral Palsy does not define the person that has the condition.
"People automatically assume that CP affects your intelligence, as well as your physical ability," said Melissa. "Garrison's ability to be autonomous with his learning has allowed him to research and learn about medicine and medical advancements that interests him and shapes his future path in the medical field."

"On my first ACT attempt, time ran out too fast, and I hardly answered half the questions," added Garrison. "But that wasn't the case after Jumpstart, which got me the 25! My time management was much improved, allowing me to consider many more questions."
Garrison said the online capability really helped him because he was able to freely go back over and repeat the material as it got ingrained in his mind. "You know being able to go back over the process and just being able to apply it as necessary was vital for me," said Garrison. "Having the Jumpstart online review modules available at home really helped me because it allowed me to review some areas multiple times for better understanding." As Garrison continued his Jumpstart Test Prep review his practice exam scores improved, encouraging the Lowerys.
Garrison began the eight-module Jumpstart English review by watching his video modules while completing the accompanying workbook. He started seeing that he better understood the material by going back over and repeating what was presented to him, and learned new strategies on how to approach the test. "The Jumpstart English review was extremely helpful and yielded a +7-point improvement over my previous attempt," said Garrison.
"The four-module Jumpstart Reading review provided strategies followed by a lot of practice that definitely moved my score. It got me a 34 in Reading! This was a +14-point improvement over my previous attempt!"
The math content review was also very helpful to Garrison, which yielded a +2 improvement in his score. "The thing that helped me in math was definitely learning how to run the graphing calculator and learning how to speed up my process in terms of punching in the numbers and knowing the formulas needed in order to solve for a lot of the equations," said Garrison. "That was the main thing that really helped me in the math was learning the calculator."
The Future
Garrison now plans to attend Southwest Mississippi Community College in the fall and has now qualified for academic scholarships. "We are so excited for Garrison to experience a whole new world of meeting people, interacting with professors, and beginning a new chapter in life. We are very thankful for the Jumpstart Test Prep ACT review," surmised Melissa.

The company has found that when students are coached step-by-step, they can quickly secure significant gains, regardless of their initial proficiency in the subject area.
Walker and McClendon cite the top three competitive distinctions of Jumpstart Test Prep:
1. Proven exam prep expertise honed over a lifetime of successful results. The content review is delivered on-demand. It is highly visual and animated. Students respond to the ACT®-style practice questions.
2. The Jumpstart Test Prep review is engaging, not boring! Presented by a group of fun, young, diverse people, and presented in short 30-minute segments. Students must actively engage as they follow along in their workbook to build flashcards by completing the blanks and work ACT®-style practice problems as the online review progresses.
3. Improved time management. Jumpstart Test Prep reviews content step-by-step, and then shows how to apply that content with follow-up examples. The examples are followed with challenge questions allowing a clock timer countdown. Time is critical on the ACT® and by the end of our review; Jumpstart Test Prep students know the average amount of time they can allocate per question and what to do when too much time has lapsed.
