Acres of Land Winery Take Three Medals in Wine Competition Judged by Consumers

Acres of Land Winery, in Richmond, Kentucky, has been awarded three medals in an international wine competitions that was judged by the wine tasting public.

Acres of Land Winery scored a gold, a silver, and a bronze medal for three of its wines in the 2011 Wine Lovers' Consumer Wine Judging, held last month in Washington, D.C.

Acres of Land Winery received a gold medal for their Kentucky Chambourcin, a semi-sweet wine with intense berry flavors. A silver medal was awarded for Willie Mae's Blackberry wine, a sweet wine that is named for the owner's mother. And the bronze medal winner was the Concord wine with its fresh, jammy flavors. The Concord has also won a gold and double gold medal this year in other wine competitions.

According to Acres of Land Winery's Marketing Director, Joy Neighbors, "This wine competition is very unique and very informative for us. Actual consumers are the judges. That gives you a more informed idea of how the public really views your wines, what they want, and what they like."

The judging panel consisted of Tasters Guild Consumer members from all across the country. Experienced wine judges monitored the consumer judges and answered any questions they had regarding how to judge. Professional judges did not influence the consumer panels judging decisions. Consumers were given instructions on the basics of wine judging at several seminars held before they began. This different approach to a wine competition educates consumers in recognizing quality wine values and gives the industry a reference for consumer taste. Wines were judged on characteristics such as clarity, color, aroma, mouth-feel, and taste, the same characteristics professional judges use.

Acres of Land Winery is owned by Lowell and Katherine Land and located on the family farm in Richmond, Kentucky. The winery's Tasting Room is open seven days a week. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday. For more information, please visit the website at http://www.acresoflandwinery.com/index.asp
