5 Ways for Business Owners to Build Rapport with Clients Now!

In light of its month-long contest series, QD&G offers five tips to help business owners create better relationships with their clients.

At QD&G, many of our forums are wrought with individuals who have trouble connecting with clients for one reason or another. Sadly, we can't fix all the problems in just a few minutes. Yet, these following five steps will give business owners and entrepreneurs a leg up when dealing with their customers!

• Stop Talking! - Letting the clients run the conversation, will allow them to feel both in control and that you really care about what they have to say. If you get off topic, you can refocus them with questions or clarifying statements. However, it's a good idea to give them the floor about 70 to 80 percent of the time.
• Breathe In - And out, in unison with your customer. Somewhat like meditative states, this will create a subconscious harmonious place for the other person, allowing them to trust you more.
• Body Language - Now, don't be creepy about it, but mirroring another person's body language, subtly (this is the operative word here, people)can do wonders for making that other person feel comfortable. This will connect with their subconscious mind and encourage it to believe that the two of you have something in common. A suggestion, though: wait a few seconds before changing your physical stance, as you don't want to alarm them, thus defeating the purpose of this entire exercise.
• Keep Pace - Similarly to match body language is pacing the person's conversation speed. If someone speaks slowly, this is how they prefer to communicate, formulating the words in their mind, before presenting them. Thus, they will appreciate that you do the same. On the other hand, someone that speaks very quickly is trying to get out a lot of information as fast as possible. Someone who speaks slowly will only frustrate them, thus creating a distance between you.
• VAK - An acronym for visual, auditory, or kinesthetic, discovering someone's perception of reality can be a huge vantage point. If your customer is prone to expressing and registering information through visual kinesthetic representation he will use phrases such as "I FEEL that you LET ME DOWN." If you can discover how each of your client sees the world, and then communicate with that person through that medium, he or she will feel bonded to you, as if you are on the same team! Research VAK to learn more about how you can connect with your clients!
