4 More PureTemp Products Earn USDA Biobased Product Certification
Twenty-three PureTemp phase change materials, with temperature ranges from 23 to 154 degrees Fahrenheit, are now designated as 100 percent biobased.
Plymouth, Minnesota, January 13, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Four more PureTemp phase change materials have earned the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Certified Biobased Product Label. The label verifies that the amount of renewable biobased material in these products – PureTemp -5, 15, 33 and 35 – meets or exceeds levels set by the USDA.
The USDA defines biobased products as finished or intermediate materials composed in whole or in significant part of agricultural, forestry or marine ingredients. A vegetable oil derivative, PureTemp phase change material absorbs thermal energy and then releases it as necessary to hold specific temperatures for extended periods of time without additional energy. It is used in a variety of products, including cooling vests, warming blankets, solar-powered refrigerators and temperature-controlled shipping containers.
Nineteen PureTemp products were designated in September 2014 as 100 percent biobased. The USDA BioPreferred Catalog lists PureTemp in two categories: phase change materials and heat transfer fluids. PureTemp also been awarded the Federal Procurement Preference, meaning it is preferred by federal agencies and their contractors when making purchasing decisions.
All biobased amount claims are verified by independent labs and monitored by the USDA. The agency’s goal is to provide consumers with accurate information about the amount of biobased material in products and encourage the use of biobased products.
USDA BioPreferred
The USDA BioPreferred program was created by the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 and expanded by the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008. The purpose is to increase the purchase and use of biobased products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture manages the program. Products that meet the USDA BioPreferred program requirements carry a distinctive label for easier identification by the consumer.
