BerryKitchen.com is one of Indonesia's most cutting-edge culinary startups and now, after serving more than 245,000 lunch boxes, is aiming to grow its business 5x by June of 2016.

The online catering company has just secured US$1.25 million of Series A funding from Sovereign’s Capital - a U.S.-based venture capital firm that is focused on early growth-stage investments in Indonesia and select other markets. Existing investor, East Ventures, also syndicated the round. "We are thrilled to be partnering with BerryKitchen. Our fund seeks to invest in great teams that are tackling big, growing markets. BerryKitchen is a new and fresh concept, and their technology platform for scaling alongside a lean approach to ‘full-stack’ integration is compelling. We believe that this concept is something that a lot of Jakartans are looking for – high-quality food, at a reasonable price, delivered right to your doorstep," stated Luke Roush, Co-Founder and Managing Principal of Sovereign’s Capital.

With the fresh funding, BerryKitchen.com has set a very high target for its business. "Within a year, we aim to serve 5 times as many people per day. We will open additional kitchens to help achieve this target, which will expand our geographic reach well beyond where it is today,” Cynthia Tenggara, Co-Founder and CEO of Berrykitchen stated. To reach company growth targets, BerryKitchen is also planning to apply for a number of key certifications that will help to continually ‘raise the bar’ even as the company scales dramatically.

“We are welcoming Sovereign’s Capital and team to BerryKitchen to help Cynthia and Ivan move forward to the next milestone. Food business is an essential for urban lifestyle and coupled with technology it enhances the order, delivery and consuming experience. But above all, BerryKitchen food tastes good.” stated Willson Cuaca, Managing Partner of East Ventures, about their investment in Indonesia’s most innovative online catering.

By using a unique "credit system" and delivering high quality home-cooked food with no preservatives, Berrykitchen immediately became a hit among young executives in Jakarta. "We started off by catering to young executives in Jakarta, because we realize that eating out for lunch could be costly, but not everyone has the privilege to bring their own home-cooked meals," said Cynthia Tenggara - CEO of Berrykitchen. "So we decided to help solve that problem for them - by providing tasty, healthy food, with affordable price," she added.

Its unique credit system is what sets Berrykitchen apart from other catering in Indonesia. To be able to order from Berrykitchen, customers first must buy a certain amount of credit. For example, IDR 260,000 will give customers 50 credits - which is equal to approximately 10 lunch boxes. After you receive your credit, you can then select your meal combination every day - or whenever you feel like it. A typical lunch box will cost you 5-8 credit, depending on your choice of menu.

Not stopping with the unique choose-your-own-menu catering system, Berrykitchen has recently introduced their latest innovation - the READY-TO-COOK menu. With this menu, customers who wants to cook but thinking that it is a hassle to buy groceries and not sure what to do with excess ingredients can simply order a menu, have it delivered, and cook according to the recipe instructions. This is similar to the Blue Apron concept in the U.S. BerryKitchen staff will do all the shopping, portioning, and measuring, and they will alternate the menu every Friday.

Besides improving the food quality and increasing its daily costumers, Berrykitchen also needs to grow in the HR department. "To achieve all the targets, certainly we need to expand our team, both in number and in quality, so we're looking forward to hiring the right people for the right position, especially to strengthen our operational and technology team" stated Cynthia further.
