Historical Media Start-Up Welcomes Industry Debut

Historic Pictoric, the nation's newest publisher of historical media, will make its debut this week at Book Expo America, the industry's largest annual trade fair. The young start-up aims to connect communities with their history through the creation of cohesive, localized catalogs of historical photography and design.

Drawing upon their vast collection of historical media, Historic Pictoric puts research and restoration at the forefront of their business model. That means their products feature only the highest quality restored imagery, designed to tell a story of place.

Based in Buffalo, NY, the company grew its roots as owner Brian Maher's passion project, when he began collecting thousands of historical photographs of Buffalo as a booming metropolis at the turn of the 20th Century. He started restoring them and showing them at art fairs, reaching out to community members, and their response is what motivated him to launch the national company.

"The people who came by would see the images and were astounded that Buffalo once looked like that, the streets overflowing with people, the harbor packed with giant freighters," Maher said. "I realized these images had a story to tell, and people wanted desperately to hear it."

Historic Pictoric's flagship product is their Historic Calendar Series, with 36 titles showcasing historical photography from cities and regions across the United States. The large format, black-and-white calendars explore the history of a localized area (Historic Chicago, for example) through turn-of-the-century imagery documenting the past lives of its streets, buildings and public spaces.

Pre-orders of all 36 titles of the 2015 Historic Calendar Series will be available at Book Expo America at booth 1335B, including a free gift with purchase. Owners Brian Maher and Amy Komanecky will be at the booth all weekend, giving away free copies of their Historic New York City 2014 Calendar.

Book Expo America is taking place from Thursday, May 29 - Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Javits Center in New York City.
