Quebec City

Quebec City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and on the practical side has some exceedingly quaint places for hot chocolate and good meals, such as Le Cochon Dingue ("The Crazy Pig"). Don't worry about the language thing; those in the tourist trade speak English as well as French, and the Quebecois are known as a warm and "joie de vivre" type of people.

Be sure to visit the bilingual Museum of Civilization, which always has imaginative and interactive special displays that appeal to kids. Parents should also be sure to sample some of Quebec City's sophisticated restaurants.

Families can do some fun and easy outings from Quebec City: the Ice Hotel is just ten minutes from downtown and is a fun place to tour. Not far away is the Valcartier Vacation Village which is like a winter amusement park, with slides, show rafting, snow play areas and more. (In summer, this is a water park.)

For a ski trip head to Mont-Sainte-Anne, just half an hour away. This ski resort has a mid-sized mountain with over sixty runs and 213 km(132 miles) of cross-country trails.

Santa Fe

Bishop's Lodge has an adult look but does feature a Kids' Camp program with horseback riding, and a Horse Camp for kids has been offered in two sessions during Spring Break. (Check for updates.) The Lodge is located on 450 acres in a private valley five minutes from the Santa Fe Plaza; a spa and pool are on-site, and private two-and-three-bedroom villas are available. Did you see the movie Crazy Heart? The crew spent nine days filming here.

Saint Patrick's Day Vacations

They say "Everybody's Irish" on March 17th, meaning that St. Patrick's Day celebrations are open to all. If March 17th falls during the week of your child's spring break, St. Patrick's Day can be an opportunity for some extra fun during a visit to, say, New York City or Boston, both of which have parades and festivities.

Families can also enjoy St. Paddy's Day in some less expected places-- such as Phoenix, Arizona, where a big parade attracts over 50,000 spectators. Or the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat, where, due to some twists of history, St. Patrick's Day is a national holiday. Also in the "less expected" category of places celebrating St. Patrick's Day: a number of ski resorts have a tradition of festivities on March 17th.

Sea Island Georgia

This legendary upscale resort is the kind of place where families return for generations. Four resorts share 10,000 acres of forest, lawn, and marshland, five miles of private beachfront, and many outdoor and indoor activities for the whole family. Kids' programs are typically offered during spring break.
