Redwood Coast Financial Partners to Host Historic Airport Photo Collection, Local Aviation Art
Online, January 25, 2012 (Newswire.com) - EUREKA, Calif. -- Humboldt County's premiere financial firm is preparing to welcome both a historical photo collection of the Arcata-Eureka Airport that has never before been displayed and local artist Howard Rutherford's modern and antique aviation paintings for the Arts Alive event on February 4 in Eureka.
The monthly Arts Alive art walk provides an opportunity for locals and tourists to enjoy both refreshments and Humboldt County art in local businesses. Financial advisors Nick Bertell and Steve Suttell of Redwood Coast Financial Partners are interested in supporting local programs that enrich the lives of both children and adults in the community, and taking part in the upcoming Arts Alive is a part of that endeavor. They are excited to showcase Rutherford's work alongside the historic photos for their event that Strategic eMarketing coordinated.
Rutherford is a recent transplant to Humboldt County and is a long-time painter -- he first began drawing at age 4 and later learned how to use oil and water colors to "paint about anything I want to." While he also paints portraits, floral work and rustic scenes of barns and automobiles, spending four years in the U.S. Air Force as a weapons mechanic on F102s and F104s lead to his interest in aviation art.
He has over 40 paintings of both old and new aircraft that he has completed over a nearly 20-year span and there will be a mixed selection of these showcased at Redwood Coast Financial Partners.
On display alongside Rutherford's paintings will be a historic photo collection of the Humboldt County airport taken during the 1940s and 1950s. The focus of the collection is the landing aid experiment station that the military was using during that time.
Humboldt County Aviation Division Program Coordinator Emily Jacobs said about 110 photos were recently given to the county by Cindy Gills. The photos came from the collection of Gills' father: William Levings, manager of the experiment station and later the county's first aviation director.
While the images are available on Fly Humboldt's Facebook page, the prints have never been publicly displayed before. Not all of the photos will be on display. "The ones that are not being framed will be preserved properly," Jacobs said.
