Parker & Sons Attends the Special Olympics' Breakfast With Champions

On Thursday October 8th, the Special Olympics held its 9th annual Breakfast with Champions at the Arizona Biltmore. The Breakfast with Champions is an event aimed at gathering community support for the Special Olympic of Arizona by spreading awareness. Parker & Sons was delighted by the opportunity to be in attendance, and proudly supports the Special Olympics of Arizona.

The missions of the Special Olympics is to “provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.”

The Breakfast of Champions is thrown as a celebration of this mission. Many of those who were in attendance, including law enforcement officials, community leaders, volunteers, and many local business such as Parker & Sons, spoke of the inspirational power of the event.

"It was such a special morning. The Special Olympics brings incredible happiness to the lives of the athletes it support. Parker & Sons has been a long time sponsor of the Special Olympics of Arizona. I can't think of a much better cause to stand by,"

A number of incredible speakers took center stage. They told stories and spoke of the impact the Special Olympics has had on their lives. The keynote speaker for the event was Loretta Claiborne. She has been a longtime member of the Special Olympics and is the winner of the 1996 Arthur Ashe ESPY Courage Award. Claiborne was born partially blind and was unable to walk until the age of four. She grew up to become a marathon runner. To date, she has completed 25 marathons and has twice been among the top 100 women finishers of the Boston Marathon.

Ms. Claiborne inspired not only other special Olympians, but community members as well. The Special Olympics helps to empower its athletes and aims to show them that anything is possible. Over 1,000 individuals were in attendance in the Frank Lloyd Wright Ballroom at the Arizona Biltmore. Donations help support events which are held throughout the year, in addition to the Special Olympics signature Summer Games.
