Material + Origin

Ancient Seabed Natural Fossil Stone Collection, created from a hard limestone that polishes to a shine, is quarried from the Sahara desert in Morocco, the location of a prehistoric seabed. Found in a selection of color ranges that include terracotta brown, dark brown, black, and gray, it is available as dimensional tiles, slabs and quarry blocks, as well as custom bath and dining surfaces.

Orthoceras, the rocket-shaped fossil figure, and Ammonites, the spiral-shaped fossil form, are the prehistoric sea life naturally preserved throughout this material and still visible today in the Ancient Seabed Natural Fossil Stone Collection.

It all began in a primitive ocean nearly a half billion years ago when Orthoceras first appeared during the Paleozoic era, or about 240 million years before dinosaurs. Orthoceras disappeared around 200 million years ago during the the early Mesozoic era, or beginning of the Age of Dinosaurs. Ammonites began to appear about 435 million years ago disappearing with the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Fossils of Orthoceras and Ammonites found in the Sahara desert are among the oldest examples of theses sea creatures, dating back to the Paleozoic era.

Orthoceras and Ammonites inhabited a prehistoric marine environment known as the Paleo-Tethys Ocean, which then became the Tethys Ocean, and was initially located where present day India, Pakistan, Indonesia and the Indian Ocean now sit. This primordial ocean traveled around the surface of the Earth through the eons evolving and transforming into what we know today as the Sahara desert region in Morocco.
