Fresh wind for regatta yachts
Online, February 25, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Traditional sailing yachts designed for decades to resemble floating mobile homes do not make much sense for regatta sailing. Four Master's Diploma students of the Advanced Technical College of Rosenheim have developed an innovative concept for the interior of a 17 meter regatta sailing yacht. The objective was over one semester to work on a joint design, to convert this to a model and create this to full-scale.
The challenge was to develop a harmonious design concept for the internal facilities, consistently mobile in the three dimensions of the space. In doing so, the Master's Diploma students focussed on the ergonomic requirements of the regatta yachtsman and optimized the movements on the yacht. Through continuous implementation in 1:1 ratio, the design could be assessed in practice and continuously improved.
The four Master Diploma students concentrated on the new interpretation of known materials previously not used in this branch. For example they used high-distance weave textiles for the seats in the lounge area. Applications for this material have previously been known primarily from the automobile industry.
On the basis of the technical specifications, e.g. the use of a lift and tilt keel, the young designers decided on two hatchways. This led to a particular space situation which the interior architects had to take into account with their design. From this the idea of a "central box" arose which provided a new solution to the traditional toilet arrangement on the board outer wall.
In painstaking detailed work, the final model version was built using 150 square meters of sheet material, 4000 screws, 80 square meters of textiles and other additional materials. The budget at their disposal from the company YSA (Yachtdesign Sven Akermann) made it possible for a project of this size to be carried out. The work involved on the part of the four students added up to more than 3000 hours.
The team of interior design students hopes that this innovative interior design concept can one day become reality or at least that it will influence the interior design of modern regatta sailing yachts.
Interested parties can see the results from 2nd to 18th March 2010 in the A Building Foyer of Rosenheim Technical College.
